Conservationists sue federal government over plan to allow cattle grazing on 24 million western acres

Environmental groups have taken the federal government to court over a proposal to permit cattle grazing on roughly 24 million acres of public land in the western United States, Jefferson Public Radio reported on Aug. 17, 2026.

The lawsuit challenges the administration’s plan to expand or allow grazing on that swath of western acreage. Plaintiffs argue the policy change warrants judicial review; federal officials proposed it as part of broader land-use decisions, according to the report.

The dispute highlights continuing tensions over how public lands in the West should be managed—balancing ranching and livestock interests with conservation priorities for wildlife, watersheds and habitat. The litigation now moves the matter from rulemaking and agency decisions into the courts, where judges will consider whether the federal plan complies with applicable laws and environmental protections.
